United Way partners with other organizations to make an impact in our communities. We have five major projects and or events each year: NSU Day of Champions, NALC Food Drive, Christmas Eve at the Hospital, and ReCYCLE.
NSU Day of Champions is held in April each year. The NSU Athletic Department volunteers a full day to volunteer at non-profits in our area. Projects that may not get done or cost an organization already limited resources.
NALC Food Drive is held on the 2nd Saturday each May. The National Association of Letter Carriers and United Way organize the event. Each year, volunteers are needed to help sort and organize food collected by the letter carriers. It is also one of the easiest ways to donate food, because all one has to do is leave non-perishable food items at their mailbox for the postman to pick up. The donated food is given to The Salvation Army and the Friends program of Northeastern Mental Health. The food helps replenish the near empty shelves of the food pantries after the busy holiday season.
Christmas Eve at Avera and Orthopedic Center brings joy to those in the hospital during Christmas. Partnering with Sertoma, Thrivent, Exchange Club, and the Lions Club, United Way organizes volunteers to bring poinsettia plants and toys to those in the hospital on Christmas Eve. Volunteers meet in the hospital Christmas Eve morning and deliver items as they sing Christmas Carols. Santa and Mrs. Claus make a visit to those in pediatrics.
ReCYCLE run by Mark Marion and Jim Mortenson takes in used bikes. The bikes are fixed and given to those that need a form of transportation. The program is made possible by the Knight Foundation.
